Nuggets 207 – Lofi & Jangly

Nuggets 207 - Lofi and Jangly - Austin and SXSW by night

As promised a jangly fix.

My new thrill is Pageants. Pageants is both a jangly band from Melbourne (a slightly more garage’y sounding Twerps), and the name adopted by Avi Buffalo singer Rebecca Coleman as her vehicle to solo success. Both feature in this mix.

The Aussie Pageants are supposed to have an album out about now but there is no sign. Rebecca Coleman aka Pageant USA is testing the waters with internet only releases.

Marshmallow Overcoat hail from Tucson, Arizona and lend an early 1990’s paisley hue to this mix while the punkish Scrotum Poles bleed teen angst from Dundee Scotland. San Diego duo TV Girl lend a track from their recent mix while Widowspeak,  the Fresh & Onlys, Sennen, So Cow, Eternal Summers, Summer Cats, Archers and The Specific Heats put their jangly cred on the line.

Reina Republicana are from Madrid, Spain and have taken time out from their usual sweet shoegazey noise (see the song that follows) for this slice of jangle-pop..

Visit Club Fonograma for more Latin pop. They regularly offer up compilations that you can download. Reina Republicana feature on an album of Spanish bands covering Daniel Johnston which is worth a listen.

The Guided By Voices track is from their first album – Forever Breakfast, very REM’ish, while my favourite band and yours, Beach Fossils, both cover post punk The Wake from Scotland, and present live in session.  Finally, the only band to have equaled Elvis Presley‘s record for the number of UK Top 30 hits in one year plays us out.

A playable track listing will appear below here shortly……………<sigh – not all up yet>……….<note to self, stop writing in clichés>….

Nuggets 205 – Chug, chug, chug

Nuggets 205 - chug chug chug - can you see the surfers?

Another road trip to Hamilton. I had new music from A.A. Bondy, Sennen, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, La Sera, Beach House and others to listen to. I caught on to a 2/4 chugging vibe among some of the tracks, and hence this chug, chug mix.

Huntlly Power Station

I had coffee by the banks of the mighty Waikato, and then holed up in a hotel all day mediating….

Sennen - Lost Harmony

Heading down country I listened to Sennen and their new album, Lost Harmony. They are English (Norwich) and make serious guitar driven music; a touch shoegaze, a touch folk with some Can influences. I enjoyed most of the tracks. Wonderful.

A.A. Bondy - Believers

Heading back I listened to A.A. Bondy and his latest album – Believers. I enjoyed his first album, American Hearts, and I was looking forward to this 2011 release. It’s an excellent album with the guitar and voice up front, clean sounding but not over produced. Kinda alt-country late night’ish with an indie sensibility and krautrocky tendencies. I don’t often like a whole album, but here I enjoyed every track. Perfect for my trip home in the dark.

Some more tracks (live)

Brian Jonestown Massacre - Aufheben

Aufheben from the Brian Jonestown Massacre was an unexpected treat. I haven’t listened to a whole album from this band before. I enjoyed the documentary, DIG!, covering their rivalry with The Dandy Warhols where they were portrayed as total wasters – particularly main man Anton Newcombe. I approached the album with no expectations and enjoyed every track. Whimsical psychedelia.

All going well, a playable track listing follows…
